By Hermanas Muerte
Hello! How are you? Here Hermanas Muerte of Metal Girls in Action, is a pleasure for us conducting this interview. Bernhard: Hi, we are fine, it's a pleasure also for us, thanks for your interest!
To begin, could you tell us how is Aeons Confer right now?
Bernhard: At this moment several really interesting developments happen. AEONS CONFER finally published the album ‘Symphonies Of Saturnus’ some weeks ago, so we get a lot of great feedback from old fans and new fans as well as magazines and webzines. Besides this year we also released the video of our song ‘Aeonized’, taken from the new album. Right now we are preparing the production of a further video and a number of gigs to present ‘Symphonies Of Saturnus’ appropriately. There is a lot of work, but it’s fantastic, we have much fun, because the mood in the AEONS CONFER-camp is brilliant, it’s great to be part of it.
Let's talk about the beginnings of the band, what motivated you to create Aeons Confer? How were your beginnings?
Simon: AEONS CONFER was founded in October 1997 out of the ashes of our previous Gothic Metal band Viola Dawn by Nils and me. We´ve made the decision to move on with a new band and a new style on a much more sophisticated level. Our intention was to create Metal music which is complex & fast but also symphonic & dark. Inspired by bands like Emperor and Arcturus, we´ve started to create our own material & explored into other different styles of heavy music. Later on we decided to combine various styles of Metal with symphonic / industrial elements and found our own mixture of sounds. Since then we call our music: Modern Symphonic Dark Metal.
Who are the musicians behind Aeons Confer and what can you tell us about each of them?
Thomas: Bernhard is AEONS CONFER's singer. The diversity in his clean vocals, growling and shouting, is adding even more symphonic nuances to our songs. His stage performance and the interaction with the audience are rising the temper to the limit. Our songs are written and composed by our guitar player Simon. Also he mixed and mastered the new album. Furthermore he is responsible for the orchestration and sound design. His sense for arrangements, sound and atmosphere is the heart of our music. Our drummer Nils is AEONS CONFER's pulse, and not just on stage. His creativity is the impulse that keeps AEONS CONFER on track. He is taking care of everything and manages the band's fate. Alexander is our other guitar player. On stage, when he is becoming one with his guitar, you can feel his energy. Off stage he is taking care of the administrative stuff, like merchandising and finances. What can I say about me, I am the piano guy, I´m there for the ladies!
As for your name, what is the sense of it in the musical concept of the band?
Simon: The idea behind the name "AEONS CONFER" was to create a timeless bandname which cannot be classified in a distinct category but a name that offers us musical liberty and maximal creativity. In terms of the musical concept it means that we never limitate us in what we do and furthermore to break new grounds. Since the early days of the band we are inspired by the vastness and darkness of the universe and involved the matter of space to our conceptual register. This scientific and sciencefictional elation became our musical & also visual motive. In the artistic sense, it´s all coming back to the core of the musical concept of AEONS CONFER: infinity.
Perhaps many of our readears have not had the opportunity to listen to the work of the band, how would you describe the sound of Aeons Confer?
Nils: Basically the sound of AEONS CONFER is rooted in a vast mixture of different types of Metal, like Black-, Death-, Symphonic- and Dark Metal. Simon refines these genres in his arrangements with a transparent and modern wide screen sound, adds an orchestra, science fiction and ambient soundscapes plus a heavenly soprano voice that fits perfectly to the guttural and choral vocals of Bernhard. So you can expect an innovative, complex and well defined sound shape full of epic heaviness and bombastic kick-ass groove.
As fans and musicians, whom can be considered your greatest influences in music?
Simon: We have been influenced by many great artists from different genres such as Emperor, SYL / Devin Townsend, Arcturus, Type o Negative or Composer John Williams to name a few but the most important.
A few days ago Aeons Confer released their latest album titled "Symphonies of Saturnus". Tell us a bit about the creative process and recording of this album and everything what we can find in it. Are you satisfied with the work done in this album?
Alexander: Well, our songwriter Simon started demoing the first songs back in 2007 ("Aeons To Come" and "Colossal Void" e.g.), but by then we didn't know that "SOS" will end up becoming a concept album of such huge proportions. We kept collecting ideas, songs and fragments until we realized that we had so much great material at our hands that we needed to do a whole album and connect those pieces with each other. It took some time to settle everything. When you look (and listen to it) closer, you will realize that music, lyrics and artwork are tightly interwoven which each other. Every detail needed to be settled, discussed and reworked until everyone in the band was happy with it. Finally, recordings started in the end of 2010, and lasted for almost a year. We recorded everything by ourselves, with Simon handling all the production duties. Especially his workload was immense, helming the recordings, the arrangements, the mixing duties. I think he didn't sleep for months! We all put so much blood, sweat and tears into this record, and we bit our teeth and took the time needed to make "SOS" perfect in our ears. We had some delays however, largely due to the fact that we at first had an external producer (a very well-known by the way) who was supposed to take over the mastering of the record. He said that he'd be ready within 5 days, but when we had no satisfying master after 5 months (!), we had to pull the plug. So we bought all new software and Simon sat down again and even did the mastering by himself again. It was the best choice we could have made, as the album sounds flawless the way Simon did it!
About the critics, how has been the reception from the press and fans to "Symphonies of Saturnus"?
Alexander: So far, the reactions have been overwhelming and we are very happy with the responses to "Symphonies Of Saturnus". You know, we have been locked up in the studio and rehearsal rooms with the material for almost three years now, so we had that urge finally shouting that stuff out in public. We knew we had a great album here, which we knew every detail of it as we worked endless hours on it. We were keen to know how someone would react who is exposed to our music for the very first time... with no filter! It was cool seeing many jaw-dropping faces when we did a special listening session to friends and colleagues a few weeks ago. Now, we are getting messages and orders from all over the world, be it Japan, the US or South America. Everyone seems to be blown away by our music, which makes us very proud. It feels good to have the album out there finally, and it feels even more good that so many fans seem to like it!
Before "Symphonies of Saturnus", the band has other recordings "The Soul of the Universe", "Mirrors Heart" and "The Chronicles of Aeons Confer". What can you say about these works? What about with them? What is the importance of each in the career of the band?
Nils: Our first output "The Soul Of The Universe" was a milestone for us as a band. The reactions were quite overwhelming and we gathered a lot of good reviews from all over the world and established our trademarks of sound and style. In addition we had our first video output with "Soul" which was filmed and cut by ourselves. "Mirrors Heart" was the next step for us, to show how we have evolved as musicians and especially Simon as a producer. By the way it includes an orchestral version of "The Soul Of The Universe". "The Chronicles Of Aeons Confer" was the logical step for us to force the two ahead gone outputs together and complete this era.
In addition to promoting "Symphonies of Saturnus", what are the immediate plans of Aeons Confer?
Thomas: Currently we are preparing our next music video for the second track "ESP" from Symphonies Of Saturnus. Further we plan some shows in Germany. Next goals for 2014 is to participate on festivals across the universe to reach more people who haven´t heard of us yet.
On stage, how would you describe your staging?
Bernhard: Who ever has seen an AEONS CONFER-gig will prove that on stage you can experience a wall of energy. The fulminant sound, the dynamic and mind-crushing songs of ‘Symphonies Of Saturnus’, which are rich in variety, the aggressive and detonating action of all musicians, the scifi-atmosphere compose something special. Everything fits together, it is very hard to describe the show just by words. You have to feel it - only who has made this experience knows exactly how it feels to live AEONS CONFER on stage.

In all these years of career, how have you seen the musical evolution of Aeons Confer?
Simon: Since the inception of AEONS CONFER in 1997 we had the purpose to write innovative music and to be musically not limited in styles or genres. As the composer, I had the ambition to write music which is heavy, dark & uncompromising although exalted & bombastic/pompous. Originated in Symphonic Black Metal, we defined & developed our own style of heavy music with orchestral & industrial elements. We always kept an eye on pushing the boundaries musically by improving our instrumental skills and kept our minds open for new influences. In all these years our music evolved to a more specific yet extensive version of the basic concept. We expanded our musical repertoire and brought it to the next level. The use of orchestral elements became a major role and improved my approach in terms of songwriting and composing immensely. For we are using 7 string guitars and tuned down to f#, the sound is more massive and darker while the riffs got much more versatile. And finally the addition of clean vocals, which had a huge impact on the overall sound and width and gave the music another fresh & powerful vibe. Our music has now become a crushing combination of different Metal genres with various vocal styles, orchestral bombast, electronic samples and an apocalyptic-futuristic theme.
Finally, what is the music you are currently listening to? Any band or album you want to recommend to fans of MGiA?
Thomas: The new album "Das Seelenbrechen" by Ihsahn can be recommended. Anymore there are influences by Devin Townsend, Fear Factory, Dimmu Borgir, Meshuggah or Born of Osiris...
